Ethiopia has close historical ties to all the three of the world’s major Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam & Judaism). It was one of the first Christian countries in the world, having officially adopted Christianity as the state religion in the 4th century. Ethiopia still has a Christian majority (Orthodox Tewahdo 45million, and Protestant 14 million), with about 34 million Sunni Islam population. Ethiopia is the first Hijira in Islamic history and the oldest Muslim settlement in Africa at Negash.

Until the 1980, a substantial population of Ethiopian Jews (Bete Israel) resided in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is also the homeland the Rastafarian movement, which influenced by Pan-Africanism (after Ethiopian king Ras Taferi- later on – Emperor Hailesellase).
